When one wants to sympathize, the other wants to laugh;
when one wants to cry, the other wants to control;
when one wants to leave, the other wants to adhere...
Since ages philosophers have pondered over the questions like what is the meaning of life and what is true happiness, and then too these questions have remained pretty perplexing and inconclusive. There is an equally perplexing question that not only philosophers, but almost every lay man tries to find the answer of: Who is mightier- heart or brain?
Just imagine a traveler walking on a road and both the ends of the road pulling him towards themselves; both are strong and both are tempting, but alas!!! Both the ends are poles apart and he cannot go to both of them...he has to choose only one- a herculean task, my friend! Almost everyday, in every life situation, a person faces the struggle whether to follow his heart or brain.
When a person uses too much of his brain, he tries to find reason for and logic in everything and becomes not skeptical, but cynical and hence cannot understand a simple thing like this. A simple thing? Yes, actually a simple thing. Have we ever wondered should we use our right hand or our left hand? Have we ever wondered should we use our hand or leg? Have we ever become confused whether to use eye or nose? No, maybe because these organs have their defined function and heart and brain are much more complex than these organs, right? In a way yes and in a way no. Mechanisms of only defined functions are possible only in machines, creation of humans. But in case of humans, a beautiful and complex creation of the Almighty, they are much beyond the confinement. And that is the reason sometimes eyes speak and heart listens and sometimes eyes cannot see the things pretty clear and ears cannot listen the things pretty loud. Well, it is mistaken in itself to ask the question whether to follow heart or brain as both of them are not an alternative to each other, but rather complementary to each other. A decision taken using only brain and no heart could be beneficial, but not satisfactory and a decision taken using only heart and no brain could be satisfactory, but not wise.
God is smart enough to gift the humans with two lovely and precious things. Also, He is not generous enough to give humans two precious gifts where one would do. So rather than going for "either...or...", we should go for "...both...and..." and be smart enough to use our brain and heart both wisely. And suppose, an extreme situation comes where one has to choose between heart and brain, I personally believe, one should follow one's heart as a person can still live if his brain is dead, but he dies completely when his heart dies.
P.S. The last sentence is true in both the ways, medically and metaphorically.
